Kurt,

Katmai definitely has its own vibe, which I could only sum up as a wilderness experience that's both wild and free!

Enjoy my friend,

While a member of the US Coast Guard, I had the priviledge of being stationed in Alaska. I have travelled the coast from Attu to Ketchikan. I have returned a couple times since those days and still have a yearning to return yet again. After seeing this video, I know what my next destination will be. Thankyou!

Gina,

There is so much I'd like to do on Denali, just need to get up there and do it! However, you'll be happy to know there is an episode coming from some stuff I filmed this past summer, and some plans this winter. Glad you like the shows, and Alaska would love to have you back!

Cheers!

This is a great show, all of the shows are great. I live in Los Angeles and my daughter and I took a trip to Alaska in May of 2008 and I have wanted to go back ever since. We did not know that much about Alaska and what was available to do, we went on the fly and just found out way to Seward, and on Glasier Bay... Now I know what else we can do with your great shows. Thank you... By the Way, Are you going to Do a show about Denali National Park?

Dave -

Glad you liked the show. Unfortunately not many make it up to the Valley of 10,000 Smokes, which is why I produced this episode.

Roughing it and getting out on your own.
Brooks Camp offers a campground [ http://www.nps.gov/katm/planyourvisit/plyovicamp.htm ], which is actually nice and located about 10-15 min walk down the beach from Brooks. The electric fence is a welcome feature. Even if you're not staying at the Brooks Lodge cabins, campers business is welcome at the lodge anytime.

There is a lot of space to explore out there! Highly recommended is fishing the Brooks river, which can take several hours, and watch for bears. As for making your way out to the Valley of the 10,000 Smokes any other way... I suppose one could trek out there, but might be a heck of a trip. Camping out there, I believe it's an option. I know people hike the 13 some miles out to the volcano dome, which I'd like to do...

Seriously though... I get your vibe re: "tour bus." My experience was nothing close to that! It's casual and they make all the right stops, and upon request they'll stop if you'd like to look at something. There was more to the drive and the valley than what was shown in the show, it could have easily been a 30-40 minute episode.

Advice given to us by a regular out there -anytime after July is less touristy. I could go on and on here.. So if you have any questions feel free to contact me through our website form, and I'll answer you. Katmailand www.katmailand.com are great folks and know what it means to get away and explore. Tell Melissa at Katmai Scott from Alaska HDTV sent ya!

By the way, I checked out your website - nice photography! If you do go out, keep in touch.. I'd love to see what you captured.
Cheers,
Scott

Another great episode Scott. I'm surprised at how impressed I was by the Valley of 10,000 Smokes segment - I've read a lot about it, but your video really did it justice. Is there a way to camp at/near the Valley to explore it more, rather than being confined to a tour bus schedule?
Take care, and great work.
